Carpets and Rugs: Knot, Pattern, Color, and Origin
A guide to technical carpet details, from knots and back view to pattern, color, repair, and ownership history.
In carpets, no single sign is enough for certain identification. Pattern, warp and weft material, knot type, density, color, approximate age, back view, and sales documentation should be considered together.
Terms such as Persian or Oriental are common in the global market, but they are not technical certificates. They should be supported by precise information.
Knot and back view
The back of a carpet is the main place to read structure. Density, knot order, row regularity, and repair are often clearer from the back.
Common names such as Persian knot or Turkish knot do not alone prove country or city of production. They must be read with pattern, material, and provenance.
Color, age, and repair
Natural dye, synthetic dye, fading, sun exposure, wear, and repair all affect value and use.
If a carpet is old or restored, that should be stated clearly. Hiding repair damages customer trust.
